“What’s the worst that could happen?”
Famous last words, she thought wryly, as she struggled with the bonds around her feet.
Then again, she wasn’t really considering getting buried alive in the realm of possibilities when she started the day, was she?
She felt the rope give and nodded in grim satisfaction as she wriggled her feet apart – at least as far apart as the tight space allowed her.
Carefully, she brought her knife up and placed it beside her – how kind of him to leave her with a weapon – before reaching out around the edges of the box for some kind of slot or opening.
Nothing.
Nothing.
There.
She paused for a bit, calculating. The effort – and air – she needed to open the box and crawl out of the soil would be astronomical.
But she’s alive, she thought, gripping her knife.
And that was his mistake.
